I loved everything about this book. Once I starting reading I had to finish it. I read this book straight through, the prologue hooked me. I liked the fact that some humans knew about the paranormal world and others didn't. It was a refreshing take; the characters could be more relaxed but had to be somewhat careful at the same time. There is the mystery of who is killing the werewolves, Niki seeking her revenge but through it all we get to witness Shane and Niki fight to be free of their pasts. The battles they face for a future with each other were something that came across well.
Niki is a woman who was changed, physically and emotionally, at the young age of 17. That has shaped her into the hard, closed off, and revenge seeking vampire she is. It was entertaining and endearing to witness Niki's struggle to open up her heart. Her biggest obstacle of course was Niki herself. Niki couldn't see a future for herself, having been consumed with avenging her family for 200 yrs.
Shane wasn't supposed to be a keeper, but the fates chose him instead. As Shane starts to settle into his life as sheriff, shaman and keeper Niki shows up in his town and grabs his attention in more than one way. Shane now has to deal with this undeniable attraction to a rouge vampire, but also the death of weres by vampires. On top of all this Shane struggles to reconcile feelings he has for Niki. Sure he's the keeper but the weres, vamps, and other paranormal beings out there are monsters, right?
The Vampire King of this territory made for an interesting character and helped to add depth to Shane's personality. I'm looking forward to reading his story in the next book, Hungerstorm.
I only had a few issues with the story. Why/how was Shane picked to be the keeper instead of who it was supposed to be? How was Niki turned when her whole family was killed? Did her sire not know right away and if not he surely figured it out as she was hunting him for 200 years? So...why didn't he claim her as one of his making? A little bit more background would have made it a much more engrossing book.
Received book from author for a honest review.
I had followed Amber Kallyn's Dragos series. While I enjoyed these books, they fell into a very specific niche. This is what I expected from Bloodstorm. I expected it to be a enjoyable, quick read that I didn't have to invest too much into. Well, shame on me. This was a complete break from what I had come to expect from Ms. Kallyn. This was not a simple quickie read. It was dark, very intense and had me utterly involved. The story was well thought out with multiple threads that were woven with an expert hand.
The heroine, Niki is a vampire on the hunt for her sire. Not for a cuddly reunion, she seeks vengeance for the murder of her family. It is her only reason for existence. She has spent 200 years seeking her vengeance, eschewing all relationships along the way. That is about to end.
Shane is a sheriff dealing with an obvious vampire murder, a failing truce between the vamps and weres, and an inexplicable attraction to his main suspect. Even though he has a long history in dealing with the supernatural, he harbors a deep belief that species shouldn't mix. He is finding it extremely difficult to practice what he preaches.
I wouldn't have changed a thing about this book. Not only did I come to care about Niki and Shane, but there were several secondary characters I became more than a little attached to. The romantic thread, while predominant, in no way overpowered the story. The love scenes were powerful but carefully sprinkled throughout the story in appropriate places, so as to enhance the reading experience. Book two of the series, Hungerstorm has a prominent place in my TBR que and I am hoping to get to it very soon.
I'm always a big fan of alpha male heroes and strong / determined heroines. Shane was a fascinating character (shaman / Keeper) and determined to do his job well - even if that meant working together with a vampire that made his blood hotter than hades with desire. Niki's background was sad and compelling - it warmed me to her and made me root for her to get her revenge on her sire. I wished the book had ended a bit different, with defeating the bad guy coming more from Niki's cunning and less from what felt like too much luck.
If you love insta-love relationships then this is the book for you. I'm a fan of soul mates and fate so this was right up my alley. The story was definitely worthwhile to read, but I wanted more out of it; more on Shane's heritage, more on how a relationship between a Shaman and Vampire would develop, more on why the Fates may have chosen Shane over his older brother for Shaman, why Thomas chose to kill Niki's family but turned her? Still, it was a quick and interesting read.
This was a well-written book, with some typos and grammatical errors, but these didn't detract from the overall reading experience. Ms. Kallyn has taken the components of the supernatural world and created a new spin on their telling, one which I enjoyed very much and I'll definitely be reading the other books in the series.
The characters were fun to read, reasonably well built, and the heat generated between the main two characters seemed realistic and enjoyable. I genuinely liked the characters, particularly Shane's family.
I loved everything about this book. Once I starting reading I had to finish it. The way the characters come together is perfect for the way the storyline is setup.
