The Cloak Society Jeramey Kraatz Books

With the popularity of X-Men, Marvel comics and the like, this book will be just the thing for 4th through 6th grade readers, and maybe a bit older. Alex is a budding super villain who is struggling to find his niche within his family and their organization, The Cloak Society. "Cloak" has been trying to best the Rangers of Justice, their super hero counterparts, for years and think that with modifications to a particularly powerful gun and the skills of the younger super villains in training, this time they will take control of Sterling City. But Alex is not so sure about his role in this take over and is beginning to doubt the motives of Cloak and of his parents. Readers will be swept into the action as the opposing groups of heroes and villains collide and will wonder, right up until the end, what Alex will do and if he will be the weapon that his parents think he is destined to be. For parents, this is not a book of bloody violence that might raise alarm bells. There is action, there are weapons, and there are intense encounters between the opposing super powers, but Kraatz has a creative way for the vanquished to be dispatched instead of simply killing them! And there are positive messages of friendship and making the right choice despite pressure from those closest to you. All in all, a solid choice for my library patrons and I will be purchasing all three installments. I gave book one 4 stars because there were a few times that the story slowed down as Alex mulled over his choices and only 3 or 4 of the characters seemed truly fleshed out. I am hopeful that others will become more clearly developed in books 2 and 3.

The Cloak Society Jeramey Kraatz Books Reviews

Not my favorite children's book, but a good one. In a time where everything is vampires, magic, or a dystopian future, this brought superpowers to the table. Thought it was decently written and a fun read.
I liked it because he starts out as a week person then he grows stronger but he learns the truth to and knows how to make it work.
I would recommend it to people who love action and fantasy and I love both of those.
I gave it four stars because it was Good but not the best book it got a little boring in the middle but it was still good.
I enjoyed reading the Cloak Society because it was well written with crisp dialog and characters that seemed to match their super powers. However, I have trouble with the concept of combining the protagonists and antagonists so that the good guys are in the evil group. I will read at least one more of this series so I can see how Kraatz works that problem out.
I've never read this kind of books before, but I absoloutely loved it! The book is well written, With great characters and an exciting plot. The different characters' Powers are impressive and creative! I inhaled the Whole thing in two days because I didn't want to put it down. Great read!
Love Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan, The Accidental Hero by Matt Myklusch, The Seven Wonders by Peter Lerangis, or Loki's Wolves by Armstrong and Marr, then this is the book you'll enjoy!
Was not sure what to think when I first picked this up. The story is very good and a different take on the super line of books. This book is more of a Villain's journey, and a coming of age story. The pieces that are put in place here and the final battle is cheer worth and leave you wanting even more.

This is a good start for this series, and I'm picking up the next two books because the story one to explorer.

For this being the authors first book, it is really thought out and the growth of the main character is scary, but also one that you cheer on. The side characters grow the story also, and many of them you want to get to know even more.
In fairness, haven't been able to get through the first few chapters so maybe it gets better. Plot is slow, characters uninteresting. Younger readers might like the comic book approach but I don't.
Please understand that all my reviews focus on the interests of my middle school students. I never do a full plot synopsis in a review and try to give as little away as possible.

If you exclude Artemis Fowl (really, neither he nor his father have true super powers) and books about offsrping/descendants of the gods, I know of only two series of novels that focus on the adventures of children of super-villains/heroes. Interestingly, both were first published in the past year and both are authored by Texans. I first read Lee Bacon's Joshua Dread this past summer and have recently finished this first book in Jeramey Kraatz's The Cloak Society series. As a native Texan, I am thrilled to add Kraatz to the names of Bacon and Kaleb Nation as Texans who write outstanding YA literature. Kraatz also gets kudos as a graduate of TCU, my dad's alma mater. Go Horn Frogs!

The Cloak Society focuses on the exploits of Alex Knight, the son of ruthless parents who are leaders in a villainous group known as The Cloak Society, which is determined to establish their rule over the world and possess super-powers that make this goal achievable. They are opposed by the Rangers of Justice, who also have super-powers. In his first mission for Cloak, Alex and his friends battle the Junior Rangers, children of the adult Rangers. In the process, he meets a Junior Ranger girl his age and cannot shake his gut feeling that she is a genuinely good person. He begins to meet with her clandestinely and is moved by her candor and simple goodness. A touching first romance is in the budding, and Alex is forced to re-examine his core beliefs.

The pace of the plot is very fast and flows smoothly with nail biting action. But, to me, the book really shines in its development of Alex's character. You grow to care for this selfless, thoughtful kid who just wants to do what is right. You cringe at the incredible cruelty his own parents show when he displeases them. You sympathize with the gut-wrenching self-assessment of his foundational morals. You are touched as he experiences that helpless feeling of falling in love.

I recommend this book to all middle schoolers and to grown ups who want an adventurous glimpse back into their early teen years. It is a fast and satisfying read that most everyone should enjoy.

If you are interested in a comparison, the biggest difference between this series and Joshua Dread is tone. They share many of the same plot elements; however, where this series has a very serious tone for the most part, Joshua Dread is very light and will have you laughing out loud at times. I loved them both.
