SHADOWS AT THE FAIR: AN ANTIQUE PRINT MYSTERY by Lea Wait is the first, introductory title in the series.I was tempted to read this book because I liked Lea Wait’s other works so much, especially the new TWISTED THREADS: A MAINELY NEEDLEPOINT MYSTERY.
I did like the overall ‘feel’ of the book, but I didn’t have enough details to really like the main characters that much. The characters weren’t as ‘fleshed out’ as I would have liked. The Findley couple - I never did feel concerned about them and couldn’t understand their relationship. Is Will a good person or bad person? Gussie was all over the map and Lydia and Abe were very creepy. Joe - kind or silly? Only 3 pages were devoted to Maggie’s husband, Michael.
I did enjoy the theme of the book - antique prints. I liked the chapter introductions - information about various prints - descriptions, dates and details about the artists. The introductions were my favorite part of the book.
The mystery was plausible but I wanted more details.
I will read more titles in this series and hope they get better and better.

First one I've read in this series. I like the characters and the plot was good and kept me guessing.
This is the first in a series Antique Print Mystery. I really enjoyed this book. The characters Maggie Summer and Gussie are very likeable and realistic. The story opens at a Antiques Fair during Memorial Day weekend - there have been a series of deaths of antique dealers around the country - and now there is one here. Of course, Maggie and Gussie pursue the facts to solve the mystery. The name of Maggies antique print shop is Shadows.
It's been so long since I read this that I don't remember it. I probably enjoyed it, though.
Lea Wait has given readers an interesting backdrop for her mystery--an antiques fair. It's obvious the author knows a great deal about antique prints and antiques in general and the book is filled with accurate details which fascinate and inform. The resolution of the murder will keep you guessing until the end and will undoubtedly be a surprise.
Easy reading and well written. If I have one suggestion for Maggie Summer, amateur detective, it would be to slow down the consumption of the diet sodas. Drink more water.
Not a bad mystery. It was set in the milieu of an antiques fair, where our heroine, narrator and sleuth has a booth selling antique prints. Good to know about this business and activity, but the story line was a bit---expected. I understand that this is her first book, surely things will improve as she gets more experience.
I am very happy to say that I was most impressed with this first book in the Antique Print series written by Lea Wait. I can be, and often am, difficult to please with mystery novels, but I still love to read them and whenever I can add a new author to my list I am delighted.
Perhaps it might help that I have always been interested in antique prints and have many scattered throughout my home, but I don't actually think that is any requirement for enjoying this novel. The author's experience and expertise in the field of antique print material is very evident with information inserted in the novel concerning these fascinating pieces of history. Maggie Summer is the owner of Shadows Antiques and she deals exclusively in prints sold at fairs throughout the Northeastern United States. A dealer was killed the previous week at another fair, but Maggie isn't really concentrating on that news. This weekend is the first fair she has worked since the death of her husband and Maggie is just glad to be associating with other dealers and friends she hasn't seen in quite a while. When the death of a dealer occurs Maggie wants to make sure the grandson of her friend is not charged with the murder. Certainly Ben would not have killed anyone so Maggie sets out to prove his innocence.
This was a very well constructed mystery which worked it's way logically and thoroughly through all the possible suspects and motives for the murder. Maggie managed to run her booth and find out information to help clear Ben at the same time and it actually did feel as if all of that would have been possible. The personality the author gave to Maggie made it easy for her to talk to other dealers at the show and she gathered the information they disclosed about themselves and other antique sellers so that Maggie could separate the relevant facts into clues. I think the author did a marvelous job of leading me through the novel in the directions she wanted me to take and thereby withholding the identity of the guilty party until she was ready to reveal it. I am looking forward to reading other novels in this series and there do seem to be quite a few. That's good news for me.
Lea Wait introduces us to Maggie Summer, recent widow and antique print dealer attending the Rensselaer County Spring Antiques Fair. Word of dealer's deaths at previous antique shows abound along with murder at the Renesselear show. We meet Maggie's best friend Gussie who is suffering from post polio syndrome which has weakened her to the point of needing a wheelchair giving us rare insight into disability issues and courageous attitude to overcome. Gussie's nephew Ben, who has Down Syndrome, is Gussie's muscle at the shows and also adds perception of this condition. Maggie meets handsome Will who deals in iron kitchen and fireplace tools and they get embroiled into a murder at the fair with many possible suspects, and yes there are sparks! Interesting introduction into the world of antique prints. Every chapter is preceded with description of a particular print with its history, size and pricing. Read it!
