Zeus Is Dead A Monstrously Inconvenient Adventure eBook Michael G Munz
I think Zeus is Dead is well written. It isn't written in a juvenile manner, full of cringe worthy grammer errors and it's smart. You need a brain and a decent background in geek culture to catch all the jokes. That said it also needs the right audience. It isn't enough to like humorous fantasy and science fiction you need to like a certain subsection of that genre to appreciate the book. In other words you need to enjoy shows/books like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Mr Bean and Monty Python. If you don't this book is not for you. The pace is frenetic, the author tries to push as many jokes as he can in to every sentence and I found the characters to be thoroughly unlikable. Zeus Is Dead A Monstrously Inconvenient Adventure eBook Michael G Munz Reviews
Zeus. king of the Olympian Gods is murdered. The rest of the gods reverse his long-standing decree of withdrawal from mortal affairs and make themselves known once again via a press conference. Lots of chaos and adventure ensues. Apollo recruits Zeus's half-mortal daughter Tracy (producer of the hit TV show Monster Killer and her besotted sidekick Leif to resurrect Zeus and restore order. But first there are an assortment of olympian-created monsters, demi-gods and Titans to battle, and a giant icecream sundae to endow with immortal powers.
There is much humor in Zeus, many satirical pop culture references and author asides addressed directly to the reader, and for the most part it all works quite well, but there are some instances when the asides and pop references fall flat or a turn of phrase is clumsy. Overall the novel works, Munz is a talented writer and it's a fun read. Recommended for those seeking a lighthearted, humorous read.
In a nutshell, this was a fun read. I got some giggles, it was relatively unpredictable, it was a fun take on Greek mythology, and the author managed to avoid a lot of pitfalls and tropes. I took off a star because the "breaking the fourth wall" gimmick was, to my mind, a little overused. It is actually a gimmick I like, but I like it better sparingly. That's totally a preference issue, though, so don't let that deter you if you're reading this review. I liked the book enough that I will probably look for additional works by this author.
Everyone wants to be Douglas Adams. Why be Douglas Adams? Douglas Adams was Douglas Adams. Be someone else.
But some reviewer or flyleaf blurb writer or publicist had to go and tell me this guy was the second coming of Douglas Freaking Adams. He's not. And not being Douglas Adams is just fine and a good thing. Except as I read, since the Adams link was asserted so loudly all I could do was compare the writing to Adams's.
So every injected bit of silliness seemed contrived. Absurdities seemed tacked-on and self-conscious. Asides that should have been giddily wry stuck out in my reading mind as written by someone else. Someone not Douglas Adams. Which was unfair to the writer, because, well, he's not ... you know.
The story was fun. What if the Greek gods were real? What if Poseidon had a fishy chip on his shoulder? (See what I did there? Next Douglas Adams.) What if a couple of us mere mortals got caught up in the whole deal? Good imaginings pretty well imagined.
I found I COULD put it down. Not really a page-turner. But I blame part of that on hype and promises of finding Douglas Adams herein. Which was utterly fruitless, of course. Nevertheless, I liked it just fine.
So read this book. If it sounds good to you, you'll probably like it at least as much as I did. But don't think of Douglas Adams.
This was one of the silliest books that I have read this year, and I have read about 150 books this year. Author Munz continually breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the reader, and makes fun of the book, the author, and you, dear reader.
Zeus got himself killed, so the rest of the pantheon decided to reappear on Earth. This is a big no no. Big Z forbade it, but what the heck, he's dead, right?
I laughed out loud about every third page, and it has been a welcome change from most of what I have been reading lately.
Have fun with it and for Apollo's sake, don't take it seriously. Well do if you want to, but that may put you in bad with the Fates. Or Hades. Pay your money and take your chances.
