Disliked stopping! As it was with each of the previous seven! novels, there remained much more to tell. But stop he felt he had to do and write another three, this time concentrating on the Civil War. I read, and recommend, those, too. I was an English major and neglected history, but after I retired and moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, I thought I should address the education I neglected. And learning history by reading John Jakes is way better than sitting in classes! Great stories. I learned a lot. Great literature? Well... He did it well, but in each book there's a need for backstory, which detracts a bit from the narrative flow. That's my only quibble. Well, that and the fact that book eight, in my opinion, just up and quits. But overall the stories are highly readable, enjoyable, and informative. You don't have to be retired to read 'em. But there's a lot to read. So it sure helps. But then a lot have been made into movies and multi-part TV programs as well.

The Americans Kent Family Chronicles John Jakes 9780451214904 Books Reviews

Once of the very best series of a family I have ever read. Each book has its own story and a very special way how each generation has its own problems and how they try to deal with them. Clearly shows how each generation has different priorities depending on the safety of the country.
love the whole series, far better when you read them in order, as it follows the Kent family from immigration to the US then through several generations. the story is historically accurate fiction. the family is at all the major events of US history and helped give me a better understanding of life and conditions leading up to important events of America.
I bought these books for my husband,as I had previously read them( all eight volumes) I thought he would also!
The only way to read this family saga is to continue one volume after another as each book is a continuous story.
John Jakes is awesome in keeping the attention of his readers throughout eight volumes of reading, you can't just
not continue the story! That in itself is a difficult job for an author!! My husband enjoyed them as much as I had, thanks
for making them available on !
I very much enjoyed the entire Kent Family series and the many stories of told throughout American history. Though I definitely enjoyed some of the books better than others, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this series to another. I honestly did not want this series to end and, as a result, had a difficult time finishing the final installment.

The sole reason for giving this volume 4 stars instead of 5 is the fact that it seemed to try to fit too much into one book. The storyline follows 4 different characters and there loves over a significant period of time and it felt like some of character development was brushed over in order to continue other storylines. Despite this, the book was a wonderful read!
The whole series, from The Bastard forward, some his best works! Hard to wait to get to the next volume. You find by the last book you are as involved with the story as if they were family, and just as familiar. Definitely recommend you read the whole sries
I really love all this set of books, John Jakes always kept me looking to see what was going to happen next, I hated to see the Americans come so soon I knew it would be the end, and I want to know how the next generation turned out, especially Carter he would be the rebel, Will, will carry on the family values just as Phillip started them, and Eleanor will also keep the family values on the straight and narrow course. I hope someday John Jakes starts again where these books left off and let us see what happens to the family as time goes on. Wonderful books I recommend the entire set for a really good read that you will have to turn around and read again.
Enjoyed the various stories concerning the 3 children from their childhood until they were adults. The younger son and daughter grew up learning what was really important in life and went on to become solid citizens. Unfortunately, the older son only believed in how much money he could acquire and trying to become an important person, even though he had very little character. It was a great book!
